Basic Information about ASPnet

The UNESCO Associated Schools Programme was established in 1953 in 33 schools in 15 countries around the world. Today, it is one of UNESCO's key educational programmes, currently bringing together more than 10,000 primary and secondary schools, 350,000 teachers and over 5 million pupils and students in 180 countries around the world.

The Associated Schools Network (ASPNet) is made up of primary and secondary schools that have decided to conduct education in accordance with the principles of global citizenship, sustainable development, tolerance, inclusion, environmental education and the protection of human rights. They strive to guide children and young people towards active citizenship and an interest in building a sustainable and peaceful society. They support the values ​​and principles of the UNESCO Constitution and the UN Charter (including fundamental rights, gender equality, social progress, justice, democracy and respect for diversity).

The network of affiliated schools is one of UNESCO's most prestigious and long-term successful global educational projects.

There are currently 29 UNESCO schools operating in Slovakia.They are actively involved in projects in the field of environmental education, sustainable development and the development of competences in the field of human rights, democracy and foreign languages. School activities commemorating important international days from the UN and UNESCO are also beneficial. An integral part of school activities are also educational (historical-geographical) trips to cultural sites of UNESCO World Heritage in Slovakia or abroad. As part of the promotion of living heritage, schools also organize creative workshops or art competitions. They actively develop partnerships with other UNESCO schools in Slovakia and abroad, contributing to the strengthening of intercultural understanding and tolerance.

 

The main objectives of the ASPnet:

  • supporting education and upbringing in accordance with the goals and values ​​of UNESCO
  • strengthening international cooperation between schools and mobility of students and teachers
  • development of capacities for innovative teaching in the spirit of the motto "Schools as laboratories of ideas"
  • communication and integration of UNESCO values ​​and thematic priorities into the educational process

  • belonging to a global community of internationally recognized schools
  • membership in the dynamic and prestigious community of UNESCO designations in Slovakia
  • connection, cooperation or twinning with partner schools in more than 180 countries around the world, including building partnerships at the national level
  • popularization of school activities through the Slovak Commission for UNESCO, as well as its Section of Education
  • access to thematic advice, expertise, teaching and learning resources from UNESCO
  • an opportunity for teachers and students to participate online or in person in national/international conferences or thematic workshops organized by UNESCO, the University Library in Bratislava or the Slovak Commission for UNESCO
  • authorization to use the "Member of UNESCO Associated Schools" logo in accordance with UNESCO ASPnetLogo guidelines
