Educational programs
UNESCO is a world leader in developing school curricula and improving their content so that education contributes to the formation of a globally tolerant society. Through its educational programmes, UNESCO raises awareness of climate change, human rights, equality, sustainable development and the protection of cultural diversity and heritage. It supports lifelong learning, technical and vocational education, linguistic diversity and inclusion in schools.
UNESCO is the lead agency within the UN system for Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Section for Education of the Slovak Commission for UNESCO
Educational activities and programmes in Slovakia are coordinated by the Section for Education of the Slovak Commission for UNESCO.
Priorities of the Section for Education:
- Strengthening national capacities in the field of lifelong learning
- mproving the quality of literacy, with regard to inclusion and gender equality
- Capacity building in the field of vocational training (so-called "TVET-Technical and vocational education and training)
- Improving national and international higher education policies with an emphasis on quality and mobility
- Regional cooperation in the sphere of capacity building for teachers and assistants
- Improving educational opportunities for national minorities
Cities and municipalities, as well as primary and secondary schools and universities themselves, also have the opportunity to directly cooperate with UNESCO in the field of education. There are several options:
- UNESCO Learning Cities are cities that emphasize diverse learning opportunities for their citizens. Learning Cities promote informal learning activities, workplace teaching, modern educational techniques and informal education in families and communities. Lifelong and non-formal learning aims to promote sustainable economic and cultural development and social inclusion.
- ASPnet School network include primary and secondary schools which supports the values of democracy, human rights, tolerance, inclusion and development. They have access to UNESCO educational materials and an information portal where schools from all over the world share their experiences, online materials and audiovisual content.
- UNESCO Chairs at Universities contribute to the implementation of UNESCO programs
