Significant figures in Slovak political history and their overall contribution to the formation of the nation.

Project of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic: Culture for Schools

Start date: May 2025

End date: December 2027

The primary goal of the presented project is to expand the awareness of elementary and secondary school students about the complexity of the emancipation of nations. This socio-political process of the 19th century brought new political ideas, support for parliamentarism, the formation of new political movements and the right to self-determination, which significantly contributed to the formation of Slovak political thought. The secondary goal of the project is to commemorate the anniversaries of important Slovak political figures who, through their national liberation struggle, contributed to the building of the Slovak Republic.

The project is planned for three years, so it will be divided into three significant historical periods, while adhering to the rule of one year, one historical period. The first period will follow the early development of Slovak political thought in connection with Ľudovít Štúr and his efforts to form the Slovak nation through the codification of standard Slovak. The second period will examine political developments after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, especially the attempt to Magyarize the Slovak nation, and the third period will focus on the effort to create a common state with the Czech nation - the struggle for Czechoslovakia.

Structure of project:

  • The period of formation of the Slovak nation - Ľudovít Štúr
  • The Period of Magyarization – Jozef Hurban
  • The period of the struggle for the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic – Milan Rastislav Štefánik
