The United Nations Depository Libraries Network was established in 1946 to provide greater access to the documents and publications of the United Nations in its Member States. Today, the network comprises more than 400 depository libraries in over 140 Member States. In all of these libraries, UN documents and publications are available to the public for study free of charge.
At the proposal of the Czechoslovak government, in 1950 the University Library in Bratislava became the UN depository library for Slovakia, which then received the status of a first-level depository library in 1965.
Cooperation between UNESCO and the University Library in Bratislava began soon after the organization's founding, but the official document establishing the UNESCO Depository Library was not signed until 1957.
UN digital content is now widely available, and UN Secretariat libraries continue to digitize a significant portion of their physical collections.
