Web Cultural Heritage

European grant program Culture 2000 is designed to promote cultural and art projects. University Library in Bratislava is being involved as a coordinator in solving the highly actual problematic of web archiving.

Purpose and mission of the project

Much of the huge amount of information produced worldwide is created and made available in electronical form (born digital) in various formats - text, databases, audio, movies, pictures. For cultural institutions - traditional collectors and guardians of cultural heritage were posed fundamental questions. Which of these materials should be preserved for future generations? How to access their choice of a long-term protection? Every day is virtually created a vast amount of material in every field of human activities made accessible only trough computers and the world wide web. Their life is often only a few months or even weeks and no specific methods and rules or their storage could be with time lost for good. Thus, if we want to protect digital heritage as a collection of resources with high reserch and cultural value, we must establish criteria and rules for the selection of materials suitable and necessary for the preservation and protection. And this is the goal of the project Web Culture Heritage.
